Zayn Malik opens up about leaving One Direction

Zayn Malik ditched One Direction because he no longer believes they write the “best song(s) ever.”

“That’s not music that I would listen to,” he told The Fader about his decision to leave the group to pursue a solo career.

In his first interview since signing with RCA Records in July, the 22-year-old explained why he called it quits after a five-year stint with the boy band.

“There was never any room for me to experiment creatively in the band,” Malik said.

“If I would sing a hook or a verse slightly R&B, or slightly myself, it would always be recorded 50 times until there was a straight version that was pop, generic as f—, so they could use that version.”

Malik also revealed he had mixed feelings about being a part of One Direction “from the beginning,” and that his decision to quit in March happened impulsively.

“I woke up on that morning, if I’m being completely honest with you, and was like, ‘I need to go home. I just need to be me now, because I’ve had enough.’”

The singer said that while he was exhausted by the demands of being a part of an internationally famous boy band, his main reason for leaving was that he simply didn’t connect with the group’s music.

“Would you listen to One Direction, at a party with your girl? I wouldn’t,” he said. “To me, that’s not an insult, that’s me as a 22-year-old man,” he added.

So Malik is embarking on a solo career and recording the kind of music he wouldn’t be embarrassed to play on a date, or as he put it, “music that I think is cool s–t.”

The former 1D heartthrob’s new album is due out early next year, and fans can preview Malik’s music in Fader’s video interview with the pop star, which features a brief snippet of a new song called “Befour.”

As for the remaining members of One Direction, they are in the midst of a promo tour for “Made in the A.M.,” the group’s first album without Malik

Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson stopped by Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show on Wednesday to play her game “Never Have I Ever.”

Among the revelations was Styles admitting that he has hooked up with a fan, eliciting cheers from the audience.

But 1D received even more applause when all four members confirmed they are currently single.

“They are very excited for your loneliness,” DeGeneres joked.

But One Direction fans won’t be thrilled that the group’s rival Justin Bieber is poised to win the battle for chart domination.

Both Bieber and 1D released albums on Friday, with the pop star’s comeback album “Purpose” on track to debut at No. 1, according to Billboard.
