Toddler leaves IGA 'about a minute' before car crashes in

A toddler has had a narrow escape after a vehicle crashed into a Gold Coast supermarket on Sunday.

A man and a young girl were lined up to pay for some groceries at the Currumbin Fair IGA just one minute before a vehicle smashed through the shopfront off Bienvenue Drive at 8am.

The male driver, 81, had been parked at the shopping centre carpark when he accidentally hit the accelerator, causing him to drive straight through the supermarket wall and into two fridges.

No-one was injured, however the driver was transported to hospital to be treated for shock.

IGA manager Yaad Singh said the man and the toddler had only just left when the car crashed into the shop.

“They were there about a minute before that, they were the last customers,” he said.

“They wouldn’t have known what has happened, they had already left.”

Mr Singh said while there was a lot of damage to the front of the supermarket structure, he was thankful no-one injured.

“Usually on a Sunday morning lot of people come for newspapers, that is where the newspapers where, the two fridges hit the newspapers,” he said.

“It is very lucky for the staff, usually they are tidying up fridges in the morning when it is quiet.

“She (the shop attendant) had just finished stacking the drinks just 20 minutes before.”

“There was a big gap in the wall but a temporary fix has been done.”
