Bojan Bogdanovic lights up the scoreboard with 44 points, including 4 of 9 from beyond the arc.

The Nets’ 2015-16 season has been one to forget, but Tuesday night in Brooklyn, Bojan Bogdanovic put on a performance to remember.

The second-year Croatian forward scored a career-high 44 points on 17 of 27 shooting — including 4 of 9 from beyond the arc — leading the Nets to a 131-114 victory over the Sixers at Barclays Center. The total tied Bogdanovic with fellow Croation Drazen Petrovic for the most point scored by a foreign-born in franchise history, and also marked the most points scored by a Net in Brooklyn.

“I didn’t know, honestly, that he scored 44. I was surprised. I thought that he scored even more,” Bogdanovic said of Petrovic. “So I am really proud to tie his record.”

The win ended a four-game skid for the Nets and avenged the team’s back-to-back losses to the Sixers, the latest of which came Friday in Philadelphia.

Brook Lopez scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and drained just his second three of the season. Thaddeus Young added 14 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, while Yonkers native Sean Kilpatrick scored 19 points off the bench.

But it was the 26-year-old Bogdanovic who led the way Tuesday with the best performance of his young career.

“He did it in a variety of ways,” Lopez said. “He was running in transition, knocking down threes, coming off curls, doing so many different things. It really showed the diversity in his game.”

The Sixers were without four rotation players, including Jahlil Okafar, who will miss the remainder of the season because of a torn meniscus in his knee. Robert Covington, Jerami Grant and Richaun Holmes all suffered injuries in the Sixers’ win over the Nets on Friday. Covington left that game on a stretcher after being kicked in the jaw. They all missed Tuesday night’s rematch.

The Sixers, already talent-depleted to begin with, struggled without enough bodies, particularly in the frontcourt. With only four healthy big men, Philadelphia coach Brett Brown was forced to go small, sometimes playing three point guards at the same time. The lineup created mismatches that Bogdanovic exploited in the paint.

“He had matchups where he could post up, and he’s a pretty good post-up player,” Nets interim coach Tony Brown said. “We don’t do it a lot with him, but we had an opportunity to try to keep that going with him in the post. So tremendous game by him, and when we needed a lift, he was the one who gave us the punch.”

The Sixers started the game 6 of 26 from the field and complemented their poor shooting with sloppy play. Errant passes sailed out of play, unforced turnovers led to transition baskets, wide-open layups fell short, and the Nets capitalized.

Philadelphia turned it over 17 times in the contest, leading to 24 fast-break points for Brooklyn. Bogdanovic was the primary scorer of the transition baskets, leaking out for lay-ins and dunks all game.

“We really struggled against them the last two games when they beat us, so we tried to play much better defense today,” Bogdanovic said. “So that led to easy buckets, easy fast-break points, and I was there to score.”

Bogdanovic scored his 44th point on a turnaround jumper with 6:53 left in regulation. With a 50-point game in sight, the Nets faithful rose to their feet to cheer on a glimmer of excitement in a lost season.

Bogdanovic looked at the jumbotron and saw he was six points shy of the milestone.

But after misfiring on three straight shots down the stretch, Bogdanovic knew it wasn’t meant to be.

“I tried, but then I missed a couple shots,” he said. “Then I was like ‘Alright, 40 is good too.’”

Sixers guard T.J. McConnell celebrates as Philadelphia beats the Nets Sunday.

PHILADELPHIA — One night after putting up a season high for points, the Nets struggled to score in the first quarter Saturday. And while they would eventually recover and even storm ahead in the fourth, their troublesome start still stung after a 103-98 loss to the 76ers.

“When you get consistent how you play, then we’ll start turning these games into wins,” Nets interim coach Tony Brown said. “I commend them for getting back in it, but obviously there’s still a lot of work we have to do.”

After lighting up the Kings for 128 points in Friday’s home win, the Nets mustered just 12 points while sleepwalking through the first quarter Saturday. Brooklyn turned the ball over 11 times and missed 12 of 17 shots while falling behind 24-12 after one.

“That hurt us and that triggered down through the whole game,” said Joe Johnson, who had nine points. “We never got in sync.”

The Nets trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and were down 69-64 entering the fourth quarter. But Brooklyn picked things up and Markel Brown’s third 3-pointer of the contest with 6:59 remaining gave Brooklyn its biggest lead, 86-81.

The 76ers scored eight of the next 10 and went back up on Hollis Thompson’s 3 from the left wing that made it 89-88 with 4:44 left. Philadelphia’s lead was still one point once when Robert Covington drained a 3-pointer with 1:16 to play that made it 97-96. Both teams missed field goals on ensuing possessions before McConnell’s steal with 30 seconds left led to Nerlens Noel’s dunk with 21.3 ticks remaining that made it 99-96. It was enough for Philadelphia to earn its seventh win in the last 20 games. Brooklyn dropped to 4-19 on the road.

Star rookie Jahlil Okafor leads the way for the Sixers with 22 points.

Thaddeus Young scored all 22 of his points after halftime for Brooklyn, which was trying to win consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 10. Young added 10 rebounds and Brook Lopez had 17 points for the Nets (13-39).

T.J. McConnell, filling in for injured starting point guard Ish Smith, tied his career-high with 17 points for the Sixers (8-43). Jahlil Okafor had 22 points and 17 rebounds and Noel added 18 points.

STILL WAITING
Tony Brown said prior to the game that there is no firm date set yet for the debut of Chris McCullough. The rookie was active for the second straight game on Saturday and could play as early as Monday at home against the Nuggets. … Philadelphia honored the late Darryl Dawkins with video tributes, a halftime interview with former teammates World B. Free and Bobby Jones and posters to the first 15,000 fans. Dawkins played the first seven seasons of his 14-year career with the 76ers, who drafted him fifth in 1975, before joining the Nets for five seasons.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Harrison Barnes hit a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds remaining and the Golden State Warriors escaped with a 108-105 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

Klay Thompson had 32 points and Stephen Curry scored 23 points for the Warriors, who nearly blew a 24-point second-half lead. Draymond Green added 10 points and 13 rebounds for Golden State, which opened a three-game road trip with their sixth straight victory while matching the NBA’s best start through 47 games.

They tied the 1966-67 76ers, who also won 43 of their first 47.

Isaiah Canaan had 18 points to lead the 76ers, who dropped to 7-41 but nearly pulled off the most improbable victory of the NBA season.

The Nets get 23 points from Andrea Bargnani (r.) in Thursday’s win over the 76ers.

Andrea Bargnani scored a season-high 23 points, Thaddeus Young had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and the Brooklyn Nets beat the Philadelphia 76ers 100-91 on Thursday night.

Brooklyn won for the sixth time in its last seven home games. Philadelphia fell to 0-13 on the road.

Shane Larkin scored 14 points and Bojan Bogdanovic had 10 for the Nets.

Jahlil Okafor had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and T.J McConnell scored 17 points for the 76ers.

The Nets set the tone early by allowing only 13 points in the first quarter, the fewest they’ve given up in any period this season. Philadelphia began the game 0 for 15 on 3-pointers before McConnell made one with 4:11 left in the second quarter.

Brooklyn opened the fourth quarter with an 18-6 run and never looked back. Larkin scored eight during that run.

Carmelo Anthony (r.) helps the Knicks beat the Sixers without suspended rookie Jahlil Okafor, but hopes to talk to the rookie out of Duke about living life - and avoiding trouble - in the NBA.Elsa/Getty Images

Jahlil Okafor doesn’t really have a veteran voice of reason in the 76ers’ locker room, but Carmelo Anthony hopes to serve in that role for the troubled rookie.

On the heels of another video showing Okafor knocking a second man unconscious, the Sixers suspended the 19-year-old for two games – including Wednesday’s loss to the Knicks at the Garden – while indicating that he hid this latest embarrassment from the team.

Afterward, Anthony – whose character was called into question early in his career – said he can provide Okafor with perspective to overcome these issues.

“I just know how much a voice can help. In Okafor’s situation, it’s easy for people to kind of turn their backs on him in this moment. Especially with him so young, the team not being successful – them losing games over there,” said Anthony, who asked a reporter for Okafor’s phone number. “There’s probably a lot going through his mind. I would love to talk to him, tell him everything will be all right, just get through this.”

The Sixers have also backed Okafor, calling him “our guy.” But they also finally punished the center following a string of reported incidents involving fights and police.

“The further details that came out surprised me, surprised us,” coach Brett Brown said of the latest video, obtained and released by TMZ. “He told us sketchy that he was in a situation that he regretted. As far as the play-by-play of what happened he did not go into that. (Wednesday) we learned more.”

The video shows Okafor yelling at a man reported to be 27, calling him “a broke a– b—-h.” Okafor then charges him and knocks him out.

This followed another video, reportedly taken the same night (Nov. 25) and in front of the same Boston nightclub, showing Okafor punching somebody else to sleep.

Since being drafted at No. 3 in June, Okafor, according to reports out of Philly, was also caught driving 108 mph over the Ben Franklin Bridge and had a gun pulled on him during an altercation at a separate nightclub.

Okafor has played well in his 19 appearances, but the Sixers stink: they tied the record for the worst start in NBA history before winning their first game Tuesday to improve to 1-18.

“I feel like I’m looking at a 19-year-old kid that has all of a sudden come upon money and has been used to winning, used to being in the limelight,” Brown said of Okafor, who won the national title with Duke last year. “And then all of a sudden when you’ve got a 19-year-old, things like this can happen. And I think that because of the repetitive nature that has happened to Jahlil, that we take it very seriously.”

Anthony’s first years in the league included an infamous “Stop Snitchin” video and a brawl at the Garden where he sucker punched Mardy Collins.

“I had to learn the hard way,” he said. “I had to really figure out that I had control of my own career and which direction I wanted to go in.”

Kristaps Porzingis will get to match up against fellow lottery pick Jahlil Okafor as the Knicks try to end their losing streak against the much-maligned 76ers.

The Knicks are in a rut and immersed in a season-high four-game losing streak, but the perfect cure to NBA ills is coming to town: those historically awful, tank-commanding 76ers.

The Sixers (0-18), who represent New York’s next opponent at the Garden on Wednesday, are off to the worst start in league history, having steered GM Sam Hinkie’s project into a third year of miserable rebuilding. There’s a chance Philadelphia earns its first victory before it travels to New York, with a ping-pong-ball special Tuesday against the 2-14 Lakers that will be celebrated as Kobe Bryant’s final Philly homecoming.

But the question has been raised for beyond this terrible start, and will probably persist: Can this Sixers team finish worse than the 1972-73 version that set the record for 82-game futility with a 9-73 mark? The former coach of the old Philly squad, Kevin Loughery, hopes that doesn’t happen.

“I wouldn’t wish that on the coaching staff. It’s tough on the coaching staff, it really is,” said Loughery, who was a player-coach during Philly’s 72-73 season, replacing Roy Rubin at the All-Star break. “It’s no fun. The worst part of it is to play your best game, play as well as your team can play, and don’t win.”

Loughery, who later coached the New York Nets to a pair of ABA titles, pointed out in the telephone interview Monday that the team with the worst record was assured a top-2 pick in the 70s, whereas today the Sixers can tank to the bottom and wind up with the fourth pick — and with only a 25 percent chance of winning the lottery.

The Sixers and their numbers-crunching GM have accumulated assets while sacrificing substance on the current roster, which has translated to a traded Rookie of the Year (Michael Carter-Williams), a lottery choice perpetually injured (Joel Embiid), a top young talent with reported off-the-court issues (Jahlil Okafor) and a 37-145 record since the 2013-14 season. The Knicks (8-10) haven’t been much better record-wise during that same 2-plus season stretch, though, and have their own problems heading into Wednesday.

“There are a lot of dangers. They’re professionals,” Arron Afflalo said. “They’re in this league for a reason. We’re going through our own semi-mini-losing-streak. So we don’t intend to have any letdown on our homecourt Wednesday. We need to get back to our winning ways despite their circumstances.”

Since winning back-to-back games in OKC and Houston less than two weeks ago, the Knicks had been so lackluster that they trumpeted Sunday’s fourth-quarter collapse as progress. Derek Fisher’s rotations have lacked continuity and are deeper than most, meaning minutes are spread out but also very small for certain reserves. Two players acquired in multi-years deals during the offseason – Kyle O’Quinn and Derrick Williams – have been in-and-out of the rotation.

Afflalo said there was a team meeting ahead of Sunday’s 116-111 OT loss to the Rockets, addressing “a lot of frustrations.”

“We met as a group and let a lot of frustrations go about what it takes to win in this league, what it takes to stay out of each other’s way so we can all excel,” said the shooting guard after the Knicks fell to 3-6 at home. “And every guy in here (Sunday night) did a great job to contribute in the best way that they can. And it worked well for most of us. Obviously, we didn’t get the win. But for most part, if people can stay in our roles and allow each other to do what we do best, we’ll have more success.”

Fisher, whose team has the benefit of playing Philly four times this season, understands that all his players want more time on the floor.

“I don’t think any player is comfortable in his role. If (Carmelo Anthony’s) playing 34 minutes, he wants to play 38 minutes. If a guy is playing 15 minutes, he wants to play 20 minutes. It’s just the psychology of this game,” the coach said. “We don’t expect guys to be comfortable or like their roles even. They’re going to want more shots. They’re going to want more chances to show what they can do. That’ll always be there. The big challenge is how you do balance and fight against your own ego to do what’s best for the team.”

The Sixers have been playing better lately, falling in down-the-wire fashion in four of their previous five games. It has Loughery believing the first victory is on the horizon.

“They just don’t have a go-to guy down the stretch,” Loughery said. “They’ll win some games, unless they’ve totally lost their confidence.”
