Study slams BMI scale that labels Super Bowl players obese

The Denver Broncos all break the BMI scale.

The BMI scale is B.S.

Roughly 54 million Americans — including the entire roster of the AFC Champion Denver Broncos — are healthy despite having body-mass indexes in the “overweight” range, a new study reveals.

The findings by University of California reseachers also determined that 30% of “normal” individuals on the BMI scale were metabolically unhealthy.

“This should be the final nail in the coffin for BMI,” the study’s co-author Jeffrey Hunger said in a statement.

The “body mass index” is a ratio of a person’s weight (in kilograms) to his height (in meters) squared.

The method was devised by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the early 19th century as an easy and inexpensive way to measure the degree of obesity in the general population.

The faulty scale takes height and weight into consideration without distinguishing between muscle mass and fat mass.

The National Health Institute began using the current BMI guidelines in 1998 to set a standard for doctors, dietitians and government officials to follow gauging healthy weight. A person is “normal” if the ratio is 18.5-24.9, “overweight” if the number is 25-29.9, and “obese” if it’s 30 or greater.

But when the Cal scientists took into account a person’s blood pressure and cholesterol, nearly half of so-called “overweight” individuals, and 29% of “obese” people, were metabolically healthy.

Both Broncos QB Peyton Manning and Panthers QB Cam Newton are supposedly “overweight.”

This misclassification not only affects health insurance costs for many Americans whose companies use BMI as a factor, but it also benches many fit pro athletes on the fat list.

Jocks are are likely to be more muscular and pack higher bone mineral density than less active people, which makes them heavier and skews their result.

How far? In a review by NPR on the eve of Super Bowl 50 this Sunday, every single Bronco player was found to be overweight or obese. Quarterback Peyton Manning is an overweight 27.3 with his 6-foot-5, 230-pound frame. And nose tackle Sylvester Williams, who is 6-foot-2, 313 pounds, is soundly “obese” with a BMI of 40.

The Panthers don’t fare much better. Quarterback Cam Newton, who is 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, straddles the border between overweight and obese on the BMI scale. Defense end Jared Allen, standing at 6-foot-6 and 270 pounds, is in the obese camp.

“Many people see obesity as a death sentence,” said A. Janet Tomiyama, an assistant professor of psychology in the UCLA College and the study’s lead author. “But the data show there are tens of millions of people who are overweight and obese and are perfectly healthy.”
