The mother of a New Jersey student said that her daughter killed herself because William Paterson University did not fully investigate her claim that she was raped.
Cherelle Locklear was 21-years-old when she found dead in a dormitory bathroom at the Wayne school last November, two months after she was raped, according to a federal lawsuit.
Her mother Marquesa Jackson-Locklear said in the suit filed last week that her daughter was attacked at the Sigma Pi house, but that William Paterson “did not engage in even a modicum of the investigation required by law.”
William Paterson University says that is cannot comment on the case.
In addition to the university, the Title IX suit names Sigma Pi, William Paterson President Kathleen Waldron, other employees at the school and its police force as responsible for the young woman’s death.
Jackson-Locklear says that her daughter reported the alleged rape to campus administrator Theresa Bivaletz after a suicide attempt in October, but that it was not immediately to police.
Locklear reported the alleged rape to a campus administrator, though her mother says the accused attacker was never questioned.
She added that after receiving the complaint, police did not question the accused rapist and he was not disciplined in any way.
William Paterson University spokeswoman Mary Beth Zeman said that the university is saddened by the loss of its student, but is unable to comment on the case.
