Kobe Bryant announces he will retire at the end of this season.
Leave it to Kobe Bryant to announce his retirement without using the word “retire.”
In a somewhat ambigous poem meant to be emotional posted on Derek Jeter’s public-relations machine ‘The Players Tribune’ the Lakers guard goes full-on drama queen, writing a nine-stanza work titled ‘Dear Basketball’ that includes the lines “This season is all I have left to give” and “But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.”
Speculation has long been that this would be Bryant’s last season in the NBA – his contract, valued at $ 25 million for 2015-16, expires at the end of this season.
Carmelo Anrthony and other friends and rivals around the NBA will say their goodbyes to the longtime Laker.
Bryant’s Hall of Fame career includes five NBA titles, two Finals MVP awards, one regular season MVP award and 17 All-Star appearances.
He is currently third on the NBA’s career scoring list with 32,670 points.
This season, Bryant is averaging a career-worst 15.7 points per game. The Lakers are 2-13 so far.
