A Florida man was jailed for a year for biting his mother’s shih-tzu and causing injuries comparable to a car accident.
A Florida man has been sentenced to a year in jail for biting a small dog on the face and choking him so hard his eye popped out.
The court heard David Etzel, 37, had been drinking and teasing his mother’s Shih Tzu, named Cujo, when the dog allegedly nipped at him.
He reacted by biting the dog and wringing its neck, Etzel’s mother, Michelle, told the Palm Beach County court.
Etzel caused injuries comparable to being hit by a car or being attacked by another dog according to a veterinarian who gave evidence.
The veterinarian said Cujo’s injuries, which were caused in April, were so severe, it was as if he’d been run over by a car.
Experts were able to reinsert Cujo’s eye, but he will remain blind.
A jury took less than 30 minutes to find Etzel guilty of felony animal cruelty, and he was sentenced on Friday.
Etzel’s mother said her son needed help for alcohol abuse.
“I’m happy he was held accountable for what he did to my dog,” she told the Palm Beach Post.
“My son needs alcohol treatment, and he needs anger management treatment.”
