Charlie Sheen has released himself from his prison .
The 50-year-old actor revealed he is HIV positive on the “Today” show Tuesday. “It’s a hard three letters to absorb,” he said.
It is “impossible” that he has infected others, he told host Matt Lauer. He does not know how he contracted the virus.
Sheen, who found out about the virus “roughly four years ago,” admitted he has paid big bucks to keep his health status quiet.
After his reveal he is now free from the “millions” he has doled out.
“What people forget its money they are taking from my children,” he said of the bribes.
Lauer question the “Anger Management” star about an instance where a partner took a photo of his medication and threatened to sell it.
Sheen confirmed that was true and that it marked the end of their relationship.
HIV, which stands for human immunodeficiency virus, is the virus that causes AIDS. More than 1.2 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV – and 12.8% of them are unaware of their infection.
Actor Charlie Sheen arrives at the Dimension Films’ ‘Scary Movie 5’ premiere at the ArcLight Cinemas Cinerama Dome on April 11 in Hollywood, Calif.
Sources told the Daily News on Monday that Sheen had safeguarded his diagnosis for years – but claimed that the powerful drugs he had been taking worked so well, follow-up testing failed to show the virus in his bloodstream.
“He’s alright. He’s undetectable,” the source said Monday.
It’s not clear exactly when Sheen’s third and last wife, Brooke Mueller, learned about his diagnosis. One source said Mueller was “shocked” to learn about the virus after their 2011 divorce, while another reported she knew about it while they were still married.
The couple’s twin sons, who are now 6 years old, do not have the virus.
Charlie Sheen is seen on the rooftop of Live Nation building drinking “Tiger Blood” in Beverly Hills on March 7, 2011 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Sheen’s prior wife Denise Richards also knew about his HIV status long before his public announcement.
He contracted the virus after he and Richards divorced in 2006. The couple’s two daughters, 11-year-old Sam and 10-year-old Lola, and Richards are all HIV-free.
Some of Sheen’s other partners were more shocked by the news.
Ex-fiancé Scottine Ross, an adult entertainer who goes by the stage name Brett Rossi, blasted Sheen for allegedly dangerous behavior in a video provided to The Enquirer.

“You exposed me to HIV for a year and a half!” she lashed out, according to the publication.
Adult entertainment star and Sheen ex-girlfriend Bree Olson tweeted Monday that she was getting tested.
“Recorded myself for half an hour being tested for HIV and getting the results. This is so stressful,” she wrote.
