Bernie Sanders to release health records before Clinton asks

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Updated: Sunday, January 17, 2016, 10:06 PM

He’s not going to drop and give you 100 pushups, but Bernie Sanders plans to show he’s physically fit to serve as President amid a report that a super PAC planned to demand he prove it.

The Sanders campaign said the Vermont senator will release his health records soon, after the report saying a pro-Hillary Clinton PAC would insist on them as an attack against the oldest presidential hopeful. Sanders, 74, is six years older than Clinton.

“He has a regular doctor. We’ll just get you the doctor’s note,” Sanders’ campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, told ABC News.

BERNIE SANDERS CALLS FOR RESIGNATION OF MICHIGAN GOV. RICK SNYDER AMID FLINT WATER CRISIS

The campaign said it always planned to put out Sanders’ health records prior to the Iowa caucus Feb. 1.

But the issue arose earlier than expected, when Politico reported Saturday that the Clinton super PAC was planning an ad campaign demanding Sanders prove he’s healthy enough to lead. The attack ads from Correct the Record PAC, which works directly with Clinton’s campaign, reportedly would have hit the airwaves in time for Sunday’s Democratic debate in Charleston, S.C.

Sanders’ campaign immediately slammed the plan, calling it a “vile super PAC attack on Bernie” in a fund-raising email. The PAC’s founder, David Brock, then said reports of the expected medical maligning were false — but not before a top Clinton staffer trashed him on Twitter.

“@DavidBrockDC chill out,” wrote Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta. “We’re fighting on who would make a better President, not on who has a better physical fitness test.”

The attack ad report comes as Sanders, who has refused super PAC donations, is catching up to Clinton’s Iowa poll numbers in the final days before the caucuses.

Hillary Clinton put out her medical records last year, while Donald Trump had his doctor recently release a letter insisting the billionaire has “astonishly excellent” health.

Insiders have said the Clinton campaign now regrets not hitting harder against Sanders on the campaign trail. Clinton is the reigning front-runner, but by only 3 points in a recent Iowa poll.

Clinton got an early jump on health records, releasing a letter from her personal physician last July saying she suffers from hypothyroidism and takes blood thinners, but is otherwise “in excellent physical condition and fit to serve as President of the United States.” The campaign noted Clinton, 68, was the first presidential candidate to release her health history.

Republican front-runner Donald Trump, meanwhile, had his doctor release a bizarre statement in December insisting the blustery billionaire is in “astonishingly excellent” health, despite Trump’s bragging about how he eats whatever he wants on the campaign trail and doesn’t have time to exercise.

The statement concluded, “If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.”
