If you’re trying to drop a few pounds, stay healthy or eat better overall, your smartphone or tablet can be an invaluable tool.
As a health and fitness junkie, I’ve tested out just about every app available. Here are the best:
Just the basics: Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal.com
Let’s face it: most dieters are obsessed with tracking every single calorie consumed.
For those of us seeking to ease the strain of such a burdensome task, MyFitnessPal.com’s Calorie Counter app allows you to manage how many calories you consume and how many calories you burn each day, allowing you to drop unwanted pounds easily and efficiently.
The free app has more than 2,000,000 stored foods and hundreds of exercises (both aerobic and strength training) in its database.
Short and sweet: 7-Minute Workout Series Apps
If you’re busy, travel frequency, or just hate to exercise, then the 7-minute Workout App series may be for you. This series provides — you guessed it — short but very intense seven-minute workouts.
If you can string a couple of workouts back-to-back, that’s great — but even completing just one during a hectic day can help you move towards your weight- loss goals faster.
There are apps to increase your cardio stamina or strengthen your arms, legs and backside, among others. It’s the perfect way to break an intense sweat while at home or on the go.
Some of the apps are free, while others cost up to $ 2.99 to download.
Diverse and challenging: DailyBurn.com
If you’re like me, then your smartphone is your gym whether at home or on the road. DailyBurn.com provides a variety of diverse workouts that you can download directly to your mobile device.
Although there’s a monthly fee ($ 12.95), the Daily Burn’s workouts are effective and fun. From dancing to yoga to high intensity aerobics, there’s something for everyone.
Plus, you’ll get access to a variety of well-known fitness trainers. You can also sign up for a 30-day free trial.
Complete wellness program: YouPlus.com
Broken down into three different sections, the YouPlus.com app is a complete lifestyle program that customizes personal training, diet and sleep coaching. When you sign up and complete a health assessment, you will receive a customized exercise, diet and sleep routine created just for your lifestyle.
You will get a day-by-day exercise plan that helps you drop extra pounds with the Fitness+ section; nutrition help for at-home and dining out with the Nutrition+ section; and sleep help with the Sleep+ section. The app is free.
Basic but effective: SworkIt.com
Sworkit.com is another app that allows you to access workouts from your phone, computer or tablet. You can design three personalized custom workouts from the Sworkit.com free version — strength, cardio or yoga. Unlike other apps, no signup information is required.
If you choose to upgrade to the premium version, you’ll get a lot of bang for you buck. The $ 3.99 upgrade to Sworkit Pro allows you to set custom exercise intervals, save unlimited custom workouts and even get access to a personal trainer, in case you have any questions.
