In the midst of Fitz negotiating a historic peace deal, Olivia must rely on her instincts when a guest of The White House discloses powerful intel.

The translator of a foreign diplomat wants to defect to America, so who does he go to? Why, our fair presidential mistress, of course.

Who else?

Cyrus (Jeff Perry), forever cautious (and perhaps the only one), is still wary about Papa Pope’s escape.

But Fitz (Tony Goldwyn), big surprise, isn’t interested.

“It’s being taken care of.”

Mellie (Bellamy Young) is making threats again, but we have far more interesting matters at hand: Tom (Brian Letscher) is back. And so is Papa Pope (Joe Morton).

Eli is being hunted and he’s worried. So he’s set everything up for Olivia (Kerry Washington) in case of his death.

Does this mean Daddy Dearest sat in a lawyer’s office and drew up a last will and testament?

Yeah, I doubt it too.

Navid Turani (Sammy Sheik), our defecting translator, goes up on the OPA board for Quinn (Katie Lowes), Huck (Guillermo Diaz) and Marcus (Cornelius Smith Jr.) to delve into.

He could get asylum. but he’s afraid of President Razani (Ismail Bashey).

One little promise of freedom from Olivia and he spills his secret. Once again, it’s easy being Liv.

All the Oval Office needs is for Susan Ross (Artemis Pebdani) to stall the peace negotiations with Razani. And she’s nothing if not good at doing what she’s told.

Back in the legal side of the world (the one where they talk about the law, not the one where things are done legally. I’m still not convinced that world exists), Cyrus lets it slip to David Rosen (Joshua Malina) that Rowan is free.

Predictably enough, that sends our favorite Attorney General into a tizzy.

Liv goes to Jake (Scott Foley) for help protecting her father, but he’s still hurt by…well, take your pick. Olivia choosing Fitz? Rowan trying to ruin Jake’s life? Rowan killing Jake’s wife? He has some choices.

We’re still only halfway through the episode, though, so obviously the translator’s tip comes back as false and his asylum is revoked. I’m sure that won’t come back to bite anyone.

Elsewhere, Jake and Huck are hunting Papa Pope … kind of.

Huck will do intel, but he won’t get his hands dirty. He’s spent too long trying to put his beast back in its cage.

Should we take votes on how far into the winter finale we get until Huck kills someone? I’ll start the bidding at 10 minutes.

Ah, five minutes later, here we are: the translator’s tip was right and Abby (Darby Stanchfield) has to stop Fitz from signing the peace treaty.

The redhead succeeds, but it’s too late for Navid, who’s tried to kill himself in the hospital bathroom.

Then, David comes through. After all this time, he’s finally done his job. He’s caught Liv.

And now we’ve come full circle, 48 hours from the 48 hours before in the opening scene. Liv is in handcuffs for helping Rowan escape. And Fitz can’t believe his princess went bad.

After a silent fight, Fitz tells Cyrus to find a loophole to get his girlfriend out of jail. Olivia was right about the cyber attacks, so of course she’s right about Rowan, and probably anything else she ever says in her life.

Jake goes after Rowan, but he’s too late. Huck’s found him first.

All in a day’s work.

Other notes:

• Your weekly reminder that Cyrus married a prostitute.

• “Kill me now. Do NOT translate that!”

• I sure did miss me a Papa Pope monologue.

• “Otherwise, you’d be a fool with daddy issues who just got played by a mass murderer.”

• “It never crossed my mind that I would be too good for you.”

• Olivia and Abby are the only female relationship on this show and I genuinely can’t remember the last time they talked about something that wasn’t a boy.

• I’m pretty sure that David-Liz sex scene only exists a chance for Rosen to remind us all of his title.

• Whoever in the Shondaland editing bay decided to mute Liv and Fitz’s fight is a genius. That was brilliant TV.

• What do I have to do to get a gorgeous wardrobe delivered to my house?

• Next week is the winter finale. Let me know your predictions in the comments and we’ll see just how wrong we all are.
