Max Esposito has indeed ridden a perfect round in the show jumping leg of the modern pentathlon – an interesting quirk of this is that the riders don’t choose the horses, it’s done randomly…so getting a bratty horse could end up costing you a medal, which we’ve seen a couple of times here this morning with multiple riders not being able to get their steeds to jump over any of the obstacles. Max is currently sixth, but there’s still about 10 or so riders to come so he will drop down a couple more places.
Hi all, Matt Bungard here – and that was my last baton exchange with Roy Ward for the Games. I’m a bit misty-eyed.
The USA are cruising to gold against Spain in the Women’s basketball, Russia have the edge over France in the Women’s handball final, the rhytmic gymnastics is in full swing and of course, Max Esposito is sitting decently in the Men’s modern pentathlon just a day after sister Chloe won gold. What a story this might turn out to be!
It’s Matt Bungard time!
I’m falling asleep due to all the brilliant action we’ve had over night.
So it’s time to let Matt Bungard take charge of this situation and bring us some order and accountability.
Team USA should pull away with this game very soon, if they leave it too late Spain will take extra confident and be a chance to steal it!
But USA should win comfortably!
I’m out – thanks again for following along anf I wish you all a lovely Sunday!
Just like his sister?
Max Esposito has reportedly rode a perfect rode in the equestrian part of the modern pentathlon….
I havent’ seen a current scoreboard but he was ranked in the early 20s leading into the horse roounds….
QT: USA 21, Spain 17
The USA are starting to create some room for themselves to operate in attack but they have to shut down Spain star Alba Torrens who is killing it so far…..
This will likely be the quarter where US looks to blow Spain out of the water with aggressive defence and hard lane running…..
Spain star Alba Torrens excellent so far
Spain are playing out of their skins in this first quarter with Torrens making plays at both ends…..it’s tied early but USA’s depth will trouble the Spanish as much as any other part of their game.
Della Donne has only just entered the game and she is one of USA’s most dynamic scorers….
PS For those just waking up, Serbia beat France earlier to claim the bronze medal game.
Spain showing some confidence early on
Spain are sticking their outside shots and playing aggressively inside the key which is a good sign so far….
USA deadly in transition
The Spanish must avoid giving USA long rebounds or chances to run fast breaks as that just makes USA more unbeatable.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver was shown in the stands.
THE WNBA, which runs at this time of year, stopped for a month so the best players could go to the Rio Olympics.
USA lead 7-5 midway through the first quarter…
Lauren Jackson doing special comments for gold medal game
Excellent to have LJ commentating this women’s gold medal game, LJ knows them back the front and will have some insights into their players especially veterans like Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi.
USA won their group game 103-63 so Spain has a lot of improvement to do to slow down the US roster….
Look for Maya More to show plenty of class offensively and for towering centre Brittany Greiner who can dunk with ease but hasn’t been throwing down much this tournament.
“They can have any of their players on court and still dominate,” Jackson said.
“The US will go out hard early and look to control the game.”
USA women know one more win equals sixth straight gold medal
The USA women’s basketball team will take the court in just a few minutes time in their gold medal clash with Spain this morning.
The USA will start as raging favourites as they have again taken the competition by storm….
Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and others will look to kill off the game early and build up a big margin.
Men’s Modern Pentathlon update
Max Esposito is in 29th position heading into the equestrian section of his competition.

IT’S 3-2 – Honduras are chasing a mircale
Since Honduras scored their first goal in the 71st minute, the less favoured Central American nation have knuckled down and in the 85th minute a free kick led to a cross into Marcelo Peireria found his head as he guided home the second goal.
Nigeria has to hold its nerve now or find some more goals – still two minutes left plus injury time.
