Cumberland County teacher Laura Garrigus is accused of having sex up to six times with a 17-year-old student from October to December.
A married North Carolina teacher was arrested on Monday after having sexual relations with a female teen student for months, deputies said.
Laura Garrigus, 30, a married mother of three children, resigned from the Cumberland International Early College after she was reported in December. She was Monday and is accused of having an inappropriate physical relationship with a 17-year-old student for up to two months, beginning in October, the Cumberland County sheriff’s office said.
The relationship ended in December after the teen girl reported the alleged predator to police.
Garrigus is charged with four counts of taking indecent liberties with a student and two counts of sexual offense with a student, Cumberland County sheriff’s office records showed.
Each charge is for a separate incident where the student and Garrigus had a physical encounter, WTVD reported. She is held on a $ 50,000 bail, and is not allowed to have any contact with minors under 18, including her two sons and her daughter, which upset her in court.
“Not even my own children?” she asked the judge during her court appearance on Monday.
“You will not be around any child under age 18,” Judge Cheri-Siler-Mack emphasized.
Investigators told the local station the sexual relationship appeared to be consensual and happened off-campus.
Garrigus, a married mother of three, is held on a $ 50,000 bail and barred from seeing her children.
While police said evidence does indicate it was a consensual relationship, Garrigus is still charged for breaking state laws that prevent sex between a student and a teacher.
The honors biology teacher at the college preparatory school wrote about her dedication to education across social media prior to her arrest.
“I love teaching, I have the best kids (biological and school), super duper husband,” she wrote on her Edmodo page, a social network for teachers.
On her Facebook page, she wrote “Education is my life. Always.”
The alleged sex offender had been teaching science at the school since 2010, Cumberland County Schools Superintendent Frank Till Jr. told the Fayetteville Observer.
“She was a veteran teacher,” he said.
It is unclear if the student was in Garrigus’s science class.
