David Hasselhoff took the stage last weekend as Captain Hook for a two-week run of “Peter Pan” in Glasgow, Scotland. And he’s lucky to have done it in one piece after being dragged around by a crazed camel just a few weeks earlier.
While taking his girlfriend Hayley Roberts on a horseback ride through the English countryside shortly before his new show got underway, the Hoff (inset) told the British model a story that he hoped would soothe her nerves.
“A few weeks ago, he’d just finished filming a scene with a camel and he had a body double behind him and there was a camel shepherd, or whoever’s job it is to help him get on and off the camel successfully,” says a [email protected] source. The spy was listening in on Hasselhoff and his inexperienced 33-year-old riding partner on the trails outside the Lucknam Park Hotel and Spa in Cotswold, England.
“He said that something spooked the camel to where it took off across the set with him and his double and the herder holding on for dear life,” says our spy.
The panicky camel eventually tossed Hasselhoff off its back causing the Hoff to injure his knee, we’re told. According to our insider, that wily camel is why the 63-year-old “Baywatch” star was resting up at a spa in the English countryside.
“He was recuperating at this spa getting reflexology on the left knee he hurt during the accident,” we’re told. “He’d been nursing the knee and working out at the gym.”
Our insider says that Hasselhoff was “maybe limping around a little, but fine to play ‘Hoff the Hook.’”
According to our source, “He was nursing the knee, no brace or anything, and he was in great spirits. It wasn’t going to hold him back.”
We’re also told that footage of Hasselhoff’s rough ride may soon be coming to a blooper reel near you.
“A film crew got the whole escapade,” said our insider, who eventually approached the Hoff to ask about the incident. “He’s not sure where it’ll end up.”
Our insider says the footage could make for a great holiday special of its own.
“It’s funny because camels are so closely associated with Christmas and the manger,” says our spy.
Hasselhoff’s rep assures us that the star has gotten over the hump following his knee injury and “it was a fantastic weekend” for the Hoff at the SECC Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow.
